Learning Objectives: Describe how to implement an individualized telephone smoking cessation program for Black women of reproductive age in zip codes with poor birth outcomes
Abstract: The Women’s Health Initiative is a four-year community outreach and health education initiative administered by the Maternal Child Family Health Alliance of Palm Beach County with federal funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Black women of reproductive age in zip codes targeted due to birth outcome disparities are offered education and linkage to medical services aimed at improving future birth outcomes. The American Lung Association of Southeast Florida provides culturally sensitive materials and individualized telephone counseling to women who smoke. Counseling provides them with information about smoking and encourages and supports them in their efforts to quit or reduce smoking and maintain other positive lifestyle changes. It is expected that these smoking cessation services will improve women’s health and contribute toward eliminating/reducing racial disparity related to birth outcomes. While birth outcome information will not be available at this early date, results of the smoking cessation services regarding amount smoked, nicotine level and indoor smoking will be presented. The counseling outline and materials provided to clients will be displayed. Difficulties in serving this population will be discussed.
