Abstract: This 90-minute workshop will provide in-depth information on how to develop and evaluate engaging, multi-component tobacco prevention videos that target adolescents. The development process will be described using didactic and interactive methods. The information presented will include how to: define objectives; develop story concepts; write scripts; create storyboards; conduct focus groups; select talent; use animation; record on location and “blue-screen”; edit programs, and; evaluate program outcomes. We will also show video clips to illustrate each component, and provide examples of forms used in development and evaluation. Judith S. Gordon will provide an overview of the use of video in the context of prevention research, and review the video creation and assessment process. Colleen Lemhouse will discuss how to define objectives and develop story content. Lyn Foster will provide information on conducting focus groups for on-going evaluation. Steve Christiansen will share his extensive experience in program design and video production. Preliminary results of a family communications tobacco prevention video series will be presented, as well as lessons learned from the field. Participants will come away from this workshop with a better understanding of the complexity of video development within the context of a research study.
