Learning Objectives: Describe the post-November political landscape in Washington. Recognize, evaluate and take advantage of opportunities created by changes occurring in each federal election cycle. Demonstrate an understanding of how political change impacts federal tobacco control issues.
Abstract: Every two years congressional elections change the political landscape in Washington for every organization’s federal agenda. Sometimes these changes are at the margins, at other times, the ground seems to shift under commonly held assumptions and age-old truths. But each election cycle offers a whole spate of new political opportunities, which this session is designed to help participants recognize, evaluate and take advantage of. Presenters will outline the scope of changes occurring as a result of the elections and offer insights into how participants can adapt their strategies to take these changes into account. Presenters will use a prominent issue on the agenda of tobacco control advocacy organizations as an example: legislation establishing FDA regulation of tobacco products.
