Learning Objectives: Describe the process used by Alaska state partners in developing and implementing four statewide surveys building towards statewide surveillance significant to multiple diverse communities.
Abstract: The poster will discuss the methodology used to develop and implement four statewide surveys with input from diverse and distant statewide partners to create meaningful surveillance tools for tobacco programs and collaborators throughout the state of Alaska. The challenge of communication with workgroups members in the development and organization of the four surveys was accomplished through the strategic use of teleconferencing, and electronic mail culminating in face-to-face meetings. The four surveys developed were:
Adult Tobacco Survey - The Alaska ATS, providing comprehensive knowledge about the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of adults, age 18 and older, concerning tobacco and tobacco use.
Alaska Health Care Provider Survey, evaluating health care provider knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding tobacco cessation counseling along with familiarity and use of the clinical practice guidelines on treating tobacco use and dependence.
Alaska Community Policy Survey, providing a comprehensive database on approximately 350 Alaskan communities, identifying communities with informal clean indoor air policies, formal (written) clean indoor air policies, or no clean indoor air policies.
Alaska CDC Recommended School Curriculum Survey, looking at all Alaska school districts, to provide information on the use of the CDC recommended school curriculum on tobacco within Alaskan schools.
