Abstract: The Montebello Police Department was one of 16 agencies in the state to receive an enforcement grant from the California Department of Health Services, Tobacco Control Section. To help prevent the on-going problem of illegal sale of tobacco to children, the department has implemented a youth decoy program designed to identify and prosecute merchants who sell tobacco products to minors. This workshop will discuss how to establish a relationship between the local health department and police department, how to motivate and educate officers, and the importance of working with the District Attorney’s Office from the beginning of a new program. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about the operational guidelines the Montebello Police Department has developed for their youth decoy program.
