Developing a Needs Assessment for LGBT Communities of Color

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to identify three critical issues in developing a needs assessment for LGBT communities of color. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to identify three strategies to effectively engage communities of color in needs assessment for tobacco prevention/control programs. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to enhance their capacity to develop and implement a needs assessment for LGBT communities of color.

Abstract: The interactive workshop will analyze a case study from Proyecto Fenix which involved a needs assessment of LGBT Latina/o youth in the cities of Austin, Texas and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The workshop is targeted for tobacco prevention providers who intend to work with LGBT populations of color. The worshop will address critical issues and strategies to engage LGBT communities of color in the development of prevention programs that are culturally responsive and competent. The workshop will use a format that will enhance learning through a short lecture, experiential exercises, and an analysis of a case study. The benefits of the workshop are based on the need to enhance the capacity of tobacco prevention and control efforts to address the diverse needs of LGBT communities of color that consider the intersection of cultural and sexual orientation identities.
