Learning Objectives: Understand the importance of local youth advocacy involvement in a statewide youth movement. Identify successful local and statewide youth advocacy initiatives. Relate youth advocacy activities to practical youth development strategies.
Abstract: Did you know that California has a successful statewide youth-led advocacy coalition? This workshop will introduce participants to the California Youth Advocacy Network (CYAN) and its statewide youth coalition, “Fusion”. Anyone working with youth in tobacco control will enjoy this presentation from Yvette Childs (CYAN Youth Coordinator) and members of the CYAN Youth Board of Directors regarding successful local, regional and statewide youth initiatives. The presentation will include organizing a statewide youth movement from the “bottom-up”, operating statewide initiatives on a limited budget, and providing meaningful opportunities for active youth participants.
The information presented is based on experiences of the Youth Board Members and two comprehensive assessments of tobacco control programs in California, conducted in 1997 and 2001. These assessments provide detailed accounts of successful local youth advocacy activities, including policy implementation, merchant education, and other innovative strategies.
In addition, Since 1997, CYAN has maintained a statewide youth coalition which is based on California’s grassroots advocacy model. Participants will understand how, operating collectively, local grassroots efforts can translate into an effective statewide program.
It is the intent of the presenters to provide an interactive and informative workshop, in which participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and network with others about new and exciting youth advocacy strategies.
