Learning Objectives: recognize the unique role youth play as change agents in their community and identify effective and low-cost activities that empower youth to take action against tobacco in their school and community.

Abstract: In two rural Montana communities, youth have been a driving force behind changing attitudes and public policy regarding tobacco use. While many prevention programs direct their anti-tobacco messages at youth, in these communities youth directed their message to the community and achieved incredible results. What set the stage for this to happen? This presentation will discuss the unique and important role youth can play in the tobacco control movement and steps to mobilizing effective youth action. When young people asked adults to be positive role models and protect their health, adults were compelled to listen. Educating youth about the issues with creative, interactive activities allows them to find their own voice when speaking out against tobacco. Mobilizing youth to achieve meaningful, group-initiated goals empowers them to be effective agents of change in their community. Throughout this process, they learn lifelong lessons about their value and power in society. This presentation will discuss what was accomplished in these two conservative, rural communities and how it was done. Specific multimedia activities that were conducted in the school and community setting on a shoestring budget will be presented. The outcomes of these youth action projects in opening the dialogue about tobacco and changing their communities in a positive way will be discussed. Sharing of ideas from the audience is invited and encouraged.
