Learning Objectives: Explain how a geographic database can be used for presentation and analysis of tobacco data with relevant contextual data.
Abstract: PROBLEM/OBJECTIVE
The Wyoming Statistical Analysis Center is creating a comprehensive geographic database (GeoArchive) of criminal justice and substance abuse data, including tobacco-related data. This presentation will show how a GeoArchive can be used to identify problems and develop strategies for tobacco prevention at the county level.
METHODS
Data sources for this GeoArchive include: 2001 Prevention Needs Assessment (a census sample of students in grades 6, 8, 10, 12), the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the 2000 YTS (grades 6, 7, 8), the BRFSS, the ATS, and contextual data describing counties such as Communities of Excellence profiles, tobacco sales data, data on ETS workplace policies, criminal justice data, and Census demographics. County-level data will be linked to corresponding geographic areas on a Wyoming map. This map will then be placed on a web site for use by governmental agencies, substance abuse prevention advocates, and the public.
RESULTS
For example, this GeoArchive will enable an interested Wyoming citizen to click on her county on the Wyoming map and retrieve data on the use of smokeless tobacco by youth, along with data on the use of other drugs, school policies related to tobacco, the number of tobacco retail outlets within the county, and data on tobacco industry sponsorship of community events such as rodeos.
DISCUSSION
Once operational (September 2002), this GeoArchive will give the user a comprehensive picture of tobacco use within a geographic region along with contextual factors that may have an impact on tobacco use within that region.
