Learning Objectives: Understand the importance of reaching priority populations with tobacco education messages. Learn effective ways to identify and cost-effective ways to reach priority populations. Learn how to develop culturally-appropriate messages relevant to priority groups through case studies.

Abstract: Many states face the challenge of how to communicate tobacco education messages to priority populations. Based on 12 years of experience in California, the presentation will demonstrate how priority populations can be reached through paid media and grassroots public relations efforts.

The Tobacco Industry spends millions of dollars targeting priority populations through corporate and event sponsorships, advertising and other promotions. Organizations struggle for sources of funding and, thus, come to rely on tobacco’s monetary or in-kind support for their communities. Presenters will discuss why priority populations are uniquely vulnerable to the health and marketing related effects of tobacco and why it is critical to arm them with anti-industry and anti-tobacco messages.

Panel speakers will discuss the importance of garnering support and conducting educational activities at the community and state levels. A mix of statewide and community based media strategies will be explored.
