Learning Objectives: Learners will be able to use the video program to raise awareness about the perceptions,attitudes, and norms regarding cigarette smoking in the GBLTQ community. Attendees will be able to compare the issues specific to the GBLT community that contribute to high smoking rates with those of the general community. The audience will learn how to use the video and facilitator guide to help GBLT smokers: explore barriers to quitting, utilize accurate information to make a decision about smoking, and devolop a personalized “Blockbuster” Action Plan to quit smoking.
Abstract: Smoking rates in the Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgender (GBLT) community are significantly higher than in the general population. Previous research has shown that the GBLT community has specific issues related to tobacco use. The workshop will provide the GBLT community with an innovative self- help video program to raise awareness, reflect accurate norms, and show the benefits of quitting smoking through a variety of techniques.
The media intervention is based on Social Cognition and uses a point/counterpoint production technique. . The key points covered in the workshop are issues the GBLT community raised in interviews and focus groups for the film, “Perceptions and Attitudes about Smoking in the GBLT Community” (presented at the National Conference, 2001). Key topics include “First Steps”, “Smoking for the Drag of It”, Media Influences, Addiction, barriers to quitting, “ Barrier-busters”, reasons to quit, and Benefits of Quitting.
This workshop is designed for health educators, nurses, primary care, or social service professionals and volunteers who fund or provide programs for GBLT adults ages 20-30+. The audience will learn how to use this engaging video program and the accompanying facilitators guide with GBLT smokers.
The video and guide were designed specifically for the GBLT community to provide accurate information for ethical decision- making about smoking. The goal of the intervention for GBLT smokers is to explore their unique issues, move from a contemplation to action stage of change, and execute a quit plan.
