Learning Objectives: Describe the impact of training and certification on the ability of Massachusetts Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists to deliver effective tobacco treatment.

Abstract: Objective: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has had an intensive Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training and Certification Program in place since 1999. This program is administered by the University of Massachusetts Medical School and supported by the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program. The purpose of this telephone survey was to assess Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialists’ (CTTSs) perceptions of the impact of training and certification on their ability to deliver effective tobacco treatment services.
METHODS: All persons certified as of February 1, 2002, were sent an introductory letter explaining the purpose of the 15-minute telephone survey and inviting them to participate. Interviews were conducted over a 3-month period using a standard interview guide. Constructs surveyed include perception of: the overall training and certification process; the applicability of the training program to the tobacco treatment services they deliver; the impact of training and certification on the quality of treatment and on client outcomes; and the professional impact of certification.
RESULTS: Preliminary results suggest that CTTSs believe that the training and certification program has improved their ability to deliver effective tobacco treatment, improved client outcomes and enhanced their professional standing both within and outside of their agency. Final results on all variables will be presented in the poster.

Discussion: Many states are in the process of developing, or are considering developing, a training and certification program for tobacco treatment specialists. Results from this survey will provide planners with useful information on the impact of such programs on the tobacco treatment provider.
