Abstract: Communities of Excellence—A Local Perspective

The California Tobacco Control Program introduced Communities of Excellence in Tobacco Control to local health departments in California in the fall of 2000. Use of the planning framework was required as a condition of reapplying for local tobacco control funds. This presentation will discuss San Luis Obispo County Tobacco Control Program’s experience with using this tool for assessing community needs, involving the community, prioritizing issues, and developing a comprehensive tobacco control plan for a rural county. A perspective on the barriers and benefits to using CX from the local level will also be discussed as well as recommendations for effectively using CX at the local level as a planning framework and to engage local coalition members.
