Learning Objectives: Identify and describe the global youth risk factor surveillance activities being undertaken by the Office on Smoking and health and the Division of Adolescent and School Health/CDC.

Abstract: This presentation will describe the global youth risk factor surveillance efforts currently being conducted by the Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) and the Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. OSH works with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international and national partners to provide technical and scientific support to countries in the development of country tobacco control programs. This work includes two components of the global youth risk factor surveillance efforts at CDC: the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) and the Global School Personnel Survey (GSPS). The GYTS tracks tobacco use among youth across countries using a common methodology and core questionnaire. Ninety-seven countries are actively involved in the GYTS at this time and another 44 countries are planning to participate in the GYTS. The GSPS is a companion survey to the GYTS and assesses tobacco use prevention policies and programs on school property in the schools selected for the GYTS. DASH is providing technical assistance and scientific support to WHO and other UN agencies to develop and launch a multi-risk factor surveillance system for youth that will yield country-specific data to support Healthy Schools Initiatives world wide. Both the GYTS and multi-risk factor surveillance activities are school-based survey efforts and include representative samples of 13-15 year-olds in each country. Each system will be described and results will be shared.
