Learning Objectives: Understand the importance of youth involvement in tobacco control. Recognize appropriate opportunities to set reasonable expectations for youth.
Abstract: Effective youth tobacco control programs require an understanding of the importance of youth involvement. The key is to offer specific ways in which youth can contribute to tobacco control and set realistic performance expectations. This session will help adults who want to work with young people to strengthen their organization’s relationships with them. The team will demonstrate how to involve youth in projects to benefit them and the sponsoring organization while overcoming challenges. Audience will learn how to apply key lessons Legacy has learned in its work with youth on four Youth Activism Programs. The presentation will include examples of how to develop such programs. Legacy’s youth activism programs include: Project 2030 Internship Program, Speakers Bureau, Youth Activism Web site, and Youth Advisory Panel. Presenters will describe how young people have helped to develop and execute these programs and tools other organizations can implement. The audience will learn that working with youth is a rewarding challenge. The session’s panel discussion will cover young people’s roles in forming youth activism programs and their satisfaction with their roles. Participants will learn about projects and activities that include youth participation, how to set realistic expectations for young people, “real life” lessons and tools they can use in their programs.
