Learning Objectives: Compare technical assistance from government and non-government sources and determine the appropriate use of each source, considering how partnerships impact the provision of technical assistance at the state and local levels. State at least one example of an integrated approach to cultural diversity intervention. Identify at least one example of how technical assistance improves the delivery of tobacco control at the local level.
Abstract: Audience— Program managers at the state and local levels, providers of technical assistance, particularly those focused on priority populations, consultants who contract with CDC-OSH or TTAC to provide technical assistance for tobacco control programs.
Key Points—
Technical assistance (TA) provided through a partnership between a governmental agency and a non-governmental organization allows issues to be addressed in a more comprehensive manner, since it capitalizes on the strengths of each. Through case studies the presenters will describe how the synergy of collaborative assistance made a difference in their setting and how gaps left by the constraints of government-provided TA can be filled by a non-government-funded source. Two of the speakers will highlight the particular value of this approach to cultural diversity intervention, enabling a national/regional organization to integrate with state/local programs.
Educational Experience—
The audience will hear case studies describing the key points in action and have the opportunity to link the situations to similar problems they may be facing. The moderator will ensure that the audience receives contact information for follow-up in order to access TA or become involved in providing TA that can potentially make a difference in state and local programs.
Benefits—
Tobacco control programs that are struggling with multiple issues will learn about possible solutions available through specialized TA. National/regional networks serving priority populations can identify ways state programs and their organizations can work together to improve the delivery of tobacco control programs.
