Learning Objectives: Identify Latino subgroup-specific needs in tobacco control and opportunities for targeted research, communications and programs.
Abstract: Problem Statement: Due to the lack of Latino subgroup specific data on research, programs and communications, tobacco-related needs for each subgroup must be identified. Input from Latino subgroup representatives is imperative to identifying such needs.
METHODS: To better serve the needs of Latino subgroups and communities, the Office on Smoking and Health, CDC will convene in August 2002 a panel of experts from around the U.S. who have addressed Latino subgroups through research, program, or health communication initiatives. Preliminary findings from this panel will be presented.
RESULTS: The OSH sponsored expert panel on tobacco control among Latino subgroups will focus on the following: 1) Identify Latino subgroup needs in tobacco control. These needs may be related to CDC Best Practices for comprehensive tobacco control. 2) Select areas for future research within these subgroups. 3) Compare tobacco control programs that have been used to reduce tobacco use among Latino subgroups. 4) Address effective strategies, materials and or messages that will reach Latino subgroups.
Discussion: Presenters will recommend areas that need further research, strengths and weaknesses of program initiatives, and materials and messages that have been used to address these subgroups. Participants will be provided knowledge of lessons learned regarding tobacco control in Latino populations. They will also be made aware of potential opportunities for action needed to reduce the impact of tobacco on Latino communities.
