Abstract: Master Settlement Agreement funds, supplemented with other state revenues, were once considered the financial savior for state tobacco control programs. Yet, today many states throughout the country face drastic fiscal cuts as their economies lag and MSA funds are diverted to other projects.
Even as economic realities restrict state tobacco control programs' ability to fund all aspects of their programs, they must have access to quality tobacco education materials and resources for their communities on myriad topics (e.g., prevention, cessation, ETS, countering tobacco industry advertising). Many excellent resources exist on the Internet, but, once found, the volume can be overwhelming. Additionally, merely because it is on the Internet, does not mean it is credible! Tobacco control and prevention professionals must weigh adopting existing materials against expending the time, energy and funds to develop new ones. By the end of this presentation participants will be able to identify and apply at least two characteristics of the following topics:
· How to Research and Find Tobacco Control Resources on the Internet · How to Review and Assess Whether Existing Materials Meet Your Needs · How to Discern Between Copy Righted vs. Public Domain Material · How to Decide When to Develop Your Own · How to Develop Quality Educational Material
A collaboration among the nation's largest tobacco clearinghouses (California, Massachusetts, and Florida), the session covers lessons learned through interactive lecture and small group activities. Participants will receive "how to" materials; contact information for national organizations; lists of information resources, including web links.
