Learning Objectives: Describe the most effective strategies for selection, management, staffing, promotion, and evaluation of quitline services Discover recommendations from the North American Quitline conference and CDC's Quitline Resource Guide
Abstract: Problem Statement: Counseling for tobacco dependence has been shown to double quit rates, yet this important modality is underutilized. Telephone based counseling or quitlines have been developed in a number of states to increase access to counseling services. At present approximately 20 states have quitlines but a large segment of the population does not have access. Active promotion of the quitline is essential for it to have meaningful public impact.
METHODS: The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, Office on Smoking and Health has produced a Resource Guide to assist states and other health care systems in selecting, managing and evaluating quitline services. A recent conference described the current science, and strategies to address gaps in service provision, promotion, and evaluation. A consortium of service providers will share strategies, improve service provision and increase the science base.
RESULTS: CDC has developed a quitline resource guide for states in selecting, managing and evaluating quitlines. Federal and voluntary agencies coordinated to implement the North American Quitline conference which examined current science, identified gaps and recommended directions for future exploration. Recommendations from the guide and the conference will be presented.
