Abstract: Audience. Diverse tobacco control professionals will benefit from this overview of public health informatics, examples of tobacco control-related applications, and discussion of other ways to use information technology to benefit the tobacco control community.
Key Points. Public health informatics is defined as the systematic application of information and computer science and technology to public health practice, research, and learning. Keynote speaker Dr. Yasnoff, Associate Director for Science at CDC’s Public Health Practice Program Office and co-editor of the textbook “Public Health Informatics and Information Systems”, will set the presentation’s framework by first defining public health informatics, and then providing an overview of some of the key concepts of and applications for public health informatics. Through highlighting systems currently in use at the local, state and national levels, the presenters will then provide some lessons learned and suggest how audience members can incorporate public health informatics into their tobacco control work. A main focus of this presentation is the potential gain to tobacco control from expanding our efforts in this area.
Educational Experience. A diverse panel will discuss how public health informatics can assist with the development, delivery, and evaluation of tobacco control programs. Four presenters will each be allotted 15 minutes, with the remaining 30 minutes available for group discussion.
Benefits. Audience members will be able to improve their effectiveness in providing reliable, timely information to help make informed decisions, find better ways to communicate, and improve tools to analyze, translate, and present the growing knowledge base supporting tobacco control.
