Learning Objectives: Identify 10 ways to earn media coverage Explain how to use a new calendar of events web-based resource Describe two media advocacy case studies for replication to advance a policy initiative
Abstract: Audience: coalition members, community organizers, media coordinators
Key Points:Participants will be able to strategically direct media advocacy efforts for policy campaigns by working through a strategic planning model. Participants will learn how to clarify policy goals and objectives, identify target audience(s), discuss appropriate vehicles and strategies for communicating messages, use a new Web site featuring media samples, and evaluate the outcome of the campaign.
Educational Experience: Participants will be provided with tools and information to help strategically link public health policy initiatives with media advocacy plans. This session will highlight successful strategic media advocacy case studies used in passing policy at the local and state level in several states, learn how to use a new Web site featuring sample media materials, and develop their own media advocacy strategy to meet their needs.
Benefits: Coalitions work hard to effectively plan policy initiatives, and may not feel comfortable planning and implementing media strategies that will help advance their policy goals. With coalitions facing limited resources (human and financial), it becomes imperative to use media advocacy strategically to obtain policy goals. Having a clear strategy in place will save coalitions time, effort, and money.
