Learning Objectives: Evaluate a Youth Empowerment program using the Getting to Outcomes process.
Abstract: Getting to Outcomes is an evaluation process that guides one through problems and successes of a youth empowerment program, as well as improving, advancing, and sustaining it.
Audience: The evaluation process used and demonstrated is appropriate for anyone who is evaluating, interested in, or involved with a youth program. Reality Check, however is a New York youth-led movement against the tobacco industry; it is geared toward 13-19 year olds (High School students) in New York State.
Key Points: There are ten steps to the Getting to Outcomes process. It was taught to Reality Check members by Pam Imm, of Columbia, South Carolina. They are currently utilizing it at meetings, events, and other parts of their program. Surveys are conducted to measure how attendees judge their experiences. These findings are used to fix problems by making changes based on response. Another benefit is the preservation of successful strategies. The ten-step process presented leads to a greater understanding of the means and ends of an undertaking.
Educational Experience: Those who attend the workshop will learn the evaluation process. Teens will teach its process, describe examples, and lead activities. These will possibly display it's strengths and weaknesses, as well as ways to apply it.
Benefits: This workshop involves many different methods of conveying information. It will give the audience a new perspective on evaluation. They will, through active listening and interaction, learn to effectively critique their tobacco control organizations and programs.
