Learning Objectives: 1)Identify proven clinical, system, and community-based interventions that have been shown to increase tobacco-use cessation 2)Identify the objectives and strategies identified in the cessation blueprint 3)Determine how state and local strategies can complement these national objectives and strategies

Abstract: Audience

Tobacco control researchers, practitioners, policy makers, funders

Key Points

The National Blueprint for Disseminating and Implementing Evidence-Based Clinical and Community Strategies to Promote Tobacco Use Cessation was developed through a consortium of federal and non-governmental organizations with a particular interest in cessation. The draft blueprint was based upon clinical and community interventions proven to be effective in recent guidelines. The draft underwent internal and external review. An independent solicitation process (of researchers and program staff) was done using concept mapping to identify priority audience needs and additional strategies.

In Spring 2002, the consortium published a draft blueprint that outlined consumer, clinical, system, and community cessation objectives. Meeting these objectives would help the nation reach the Healthy People 2010 cessation objectives. Strategies to achieve each objective were identified. Priorities for the various federal and non-government organizations will be discussed.

This panel will identify the objectives and strategies in the blueprint. Ways in which these objectives and strategies can be integrated into programs at the state and community level will be identified. The evaluation plan for the guideline will be discussed.

Educational Experience

Collaborative action to meet the goals of the National Blueprint for Cessation – to improve health and reduce tobacco-related illness and death by implementing evidence-based clinical and community strategies to increase tobacco-use cessation in the U.S. -- will be emphasized.

Benefits

To encourage collaboration within the tobacco control community and more coordinated actions to improve cessation intervention reach, access, and success. This information can help state programs more effectively address adult cessation.
