Abstract: The research is developed from the premise that overtime, local tobacco control ordinances and strategies influence individual and community behavior and attitudes. Using a town level database that provides summary measures and quantifies tobacco control activities the following research was conducted.

When mapped to individual data from a multi-year survey on tobacco use among adults, the database is used to analyze the relationship between the town level tobacco control policy environment and reported community and individual attitudes and behavior. This lends insight into the influence of changes in the policy environment on individual and community attitudes and behavior.

The presenter will: demonstrate how policy data on the adoption of tobacco control ordinances was used to develop town level summary measures of tobacco control activity demonstrate how the longitudinal policy data can be used in and analysis of the association between town characteristics (such as demographics, state funding, etc) and tobacco control strategy demonstrate how town level summary measures of tobacco control activity i.e., ordinance adoption, cessation programs, enforcement and the hosting of events can be used to analyze the effect of these activities on individual and community level outcomes demonstrate whether changes in individual attitude and behavior influenced or were influenced by changes in town-level tobacco control policies discuss implications for other tobacco control programs
