Learning Objectives: Understand the key steps necessary in planning and implementing a tobacco counter-marketing campaign. Efficiently use the CDC Tobacco Counter-Marketing Manual to plan/implement their own media campaigns. Recognize the resources available for assistance in campaign planning, implementation and evaluation.
Abstract: Audience: Media campaign managers from state or local health departments and local or national organizations.
Key Points: There is a great need for a comprehensive resource to take tobacco control media campaign managers through the process of developing and implementing their tobacco counter-marketing campaigns. Many media campaign managers begin their assignments without previous experience in media campaign development. Others have developed and implemented campaigns but not at the levels now possible through settlement allocations and tobacco tax revenues. The CDC Tobacco Counter-Marketing Manual was recently developed to assist these individuals, to ensure that their programs are as effective as possible and gain from the past experiences of others.
Educational Experience: This hands-on tutorial will begin by providing participants with their own copy of the newly-released Manual. It will continue by walking participants through each chapter of the Manual. The session will also include highlighting of all of the appendices in the Manual, prototypes/examples of key documents that health department staff and/or their agencies would need to use during campaign development or implementation process. Throughout the session, participants may ask questions to clarify the process or the Manual's content.
Benefits: Participants will benefit greatly from clarifying the key steps to developing, implementing and evaluating a tobacco counter-marketing campaign, as well as from reviewing the breadth of example documents available to them in the Manual, so that they can re-apply the relevant ones to their own campaign. Finally, they will benefit from asking questions so that they can internalize and apply the information.
