Smoke and Mirrors: How the Tobacco Industry Seduces and Deceives Women and Girls, a Slide Presentation

Caryn Kauffman, CTTS LCSW RN, Institute for Health and Recovery, tobacco@healthrecovery.org

Learning Objectives: describe and utilize a slide presentation on tobacco marketing to women and girls

Abstract: Since the 1920s the tobacco industry has actively targeted women and girls by shamelessly co-opting themes of liberation, independence and social success in order to market their products. Young people need to be astute observers of marketing strategies to effectively resist such messages.

To create a tool that could assist peer leaders, teachers and others, the Women, Girls & Tobacco Advisory Committee, an advisory group to the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program, established a work group to develop slide presentation that would illustrate the history of tobacco marketing to women and girls, from the early 20th century to the present. Images of tobacco ads, as well as illustrations of other marketing ploys, were reviewed and collected and were organized into a cohesive slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Talking points and questions for discussion to accompany the visual images, as well as an instructor guide, are being developed.

This slide presentation and accompanying materials, including reference articles, will be produced in CD-ROM format and will be available at the time of the conference.

This slide presentation will be a useful tool for tobacco control advocates. Although it will be produced in English, it is hoped that colleagues in the developing world will also be able to use it to illustrate the tactics of the tobacco industry in their own countries by pointing to the industry’s historical efforts in the US.
