Silent Voices Speak Out

Roxanna L. Ursua, CHES MPH, Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum, rursua@apiahf.org

Learning Objectives: Identify tobacco educational interventions that have impacted AAPI LGBT communities.

Abstract: POPULATION GROUP ADDRESSED: LGBT Communities of Color

PROBLEM: There is a lack of quantitative and qualitative data on tobacco use in the Asian-American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) LGBT communities.
METHODS: APIAHF’s tobacco program and the HIV/AIDS program worked together to discuss partner agencies that are addressing tobacco issues in their HIV/AIDS programs. APIAHF will gather preliminary AAPI LGBT tobacco use data from local programs nationwide and describe successful programs and strategies.
RESULTS: Results of the intervention are unavailable at this time. This is the first time tobacco and HIV/AIDS programs have collaborated to get data and more insight into attitudes and behaviors of AAPI LGBT community. Results will be available by the time of the National Tobacco Conference in November.

DISCUSSION: Nationally and locally, there is no coordination and sharing of successful and challenging efforts to address tobacco in AAPI LGBT communities. National and local AAPI tobacco control programs often do not work together with AAPI HIV programs. In both types of programs, tobacco use in the AAPI LGBT population is of great concern and also an issue of denial. Since there is a lack of quantitative and qualitative data on tobacco use in the AAPI LGBT communities, APIAHF’s tobacco program will survey the HIV/AIDS program, which has partner agencies nationwide as well as in the Pacific Jurisdictions. The poster will describe the analysis and interpretation of the results and provide any lessons learned to conference participants.
