Learning Objectives: Describe 3 strategies to create a coalition led by young people List 3 ways that young people and adults can collaborate around tobacco control issues Explain the impact of a youth led coalition in a community
Abstract: The Boston Area Youth Tobacco Action Group (BAYTAG), is a youth led coalition of anti-tobacco peer leaders who live and work in Boston, Chelsea and Revere, Massachusetts. BAYTAG is a part of the Boston Area Tobacco Control Coalition (BATCC), which is funded by the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program (MTCP). This presentation will discuss how the youth of BAYTAG collaborate and support the adults of BATCC. This represents an adult-youth collaboration model. The key points of the workshop will focus on strategies needed to create a youth-led coalition, demonstrate ways that adults and teens can collaborate around tobacco control issues and show how a coalition of youth peer leaders can have a powerful and positive impact in their community. BAYTAG has focused on issues of media literacy and media advocacy, and how the peer leaders address these issues in the context of the coalition will be explored. Cynthia Loesch, a peer leader and a member of BAYTAG for several years and Jose Corporan, the coordinator of BAYTAG, will also discuss the successes and challenges of working with a youth-led coalition.
