Abstract: POPULATION GROUP ADDRESSED: LGBT Communities of Color
The tobacco industry targets LGBT communities and communities of color in its advertising and sponsorship of events and organizations. The tobacco industry considers these communities priority populations to direct their efforts. It is already challenging to involve communities of color into the growing tobacco control movement, especially when tobacco is not a high priority in their lives. Involving LGBT communities of color is also difficult. There is a lack of data and a lack of culturally specific and appropriate tobacco prevention, education, and cessation services for these special populations.
We will have a panel representing special populations in the LGBT community- African-American, Asian-American & Pacific Islander, Native American, and Hispanic Latino. Each presenter will share their successes and challenges in addressing tobacco in their communities. Presenters will discuss strategies to engage LGBT communities of color into the tobacco control movement.
