Learning Objectives: 1. To understand how to outreach to AAPI communities, specifically the Southeast Asian community, and address their tobacco education needs. 2. To identify the needs of Southeast Asian community and develop community assessments for this population 3. Participants will learn how to implement a similar regional advocacy campaign in the other AAPI communities.
Abstract: Objective– The regional Asian Pacific Islander Tobacco Education Network (APITEN) program in Central Valley collaborated with the Local Lead Agency to promote and raise awareness around AB 188. In effect since January 1, 2002, AB 188 prohibits smoking in all playgrounds and tot lots in the state of California. Since local programs only provide education around the law in English and Spanish, it was important to outreach and educate Southeast Asian communities about the newly effected law.
Methods – Local focus groups and meetings were held to discuss the collaborative efforts between the APITEN program and the counties of Merced, Fresno, and Tulare. In addition, competitive grantees,
Results – Currently the campaign is still being implemented. The desired outcome is to implement a successful regional advocacy campaign with the main focus on Southeast Asian families, particularly those utilizing outdoor recreation areas, especially parks and special events held at other outdoor venues. In addition, the collaboration with the local lead agencies will foster continuing partnerships to address AAPI community needs.
Discussion – The poster session will highlight the campaign’s development, major efforts, successes, and valuable lessons learned. The desired outcome of the campaign is to empower the local AAPI community to enforce AB 188 and to report violations to the local enforcement agencies. In addition, potential future implications include the involvement of AAPI communities working in tobacco control issues and increase of mainstream tobacco programs to include needs of the AAPI community.
