Learning Objectives: Through case studies and examples with Dr. Stanton Glantz, local advocates' stories and ANR experience, participants will be able to identify, articulate and counter the tobacco industry's bogus arguments of negative economic impact of clean indoor air ordinances; Understand, relate and convey the objective, peer-reviewed public health data that shows there is no negative economic impact to clean indoor air ordinance; Prepare to expect these bogus tobacco industry attacks and gather the relevant case studies, research, experts and examples to stop the propaganda in its tracks; and describe the flaws in the tobacco industry methodology that underlies the bogus economic impact data.
Abstract: This session will use case studies and examples from local campaigns to describe how the tobacco industry attempts to distort the data relating to economic impact of secondhand smoke. Presenters will describe the literature relating to economic impact of clean indoor air policies, demonstrate state-of-the-art research and economic impact data that support the public health position that there is no negative impact, and shine the light on propaganda campaign waged by the tobacco industry to instill fear and discontent into populations considering or in the process of implementing smokefree air policies.
