Learning Objectives: better maintain trust and communication in a larger tobacco control world.
Abstract: "Surviving Industrialization: Can A Movement Be Re-Born Out of An Industry?"
Beware of what you wish for, they say.
Many states have begun funding for tobacco control, growing the tobacco control community.
The growth, while welcome, presents challenges as well. One of the main challenges is maintaining the “movement” in the tobacco control movement.
A large group of any kind presents challenges in communication, decision-making, maintaining trust, and maintaining mutual understanding of difficult issues.
Strategies to deal with challenges focus on communication. Discussion of a conflict resolution policy is one area to be addressed in this presentation.
This session is designed to be an interactive discussion. Presenters will provide some strategies to deal with these challenges. Presenters also invite participants struggling with these issues to share in a discussion of strategies to deal with the challenges presented with our new opportunities.
Participants will be better able to address challenges of maintaining a tobacco control movement in the face of unprecedented growth.
Both those new and experienced in tobacco control will benefit from this session, particularly program and advocacy staff members.
Key to addressing these challenges is communication. This presentation will address that by oral presentation and interactive discussion. Participants will be better equipped at maintaining an effective tobacco control movement.
