Maybe you can have too much of a good thing, but you can never have enough advocates for tobacco control. Advocates move, get burned out, or move on to other issues, so recruitment is a continual challenge.
A relatively new potential source of tobacco control advocates exists, and is a source thatís deceptively near: tobacco control program staff.
Specific efforts to involve program staff in advocacy rely more on relationship- and trust-building, as well as thoughtful consideration for the demands upon local program staff, and less on rocket science.
This presentation will address specific steps to involve tobacco control program staff in advocacy: an integrated approach of training, timing, and thanking tobacco control program staff.
This strategy, in our view, creates more dedicated, eloquent, and outspoken advocates for the long-term. The addition of these new advocates to traditional advocates from voluntary organizations and health organizations has increased the quantity and quality of tobacco prevention advocates.
This session is designed to present specific strategies used to involve local tobacco control advocates.
Participants will be better able to address challenges of maintaining a tobacco control movement in the face of unprecedented growth.
Although this session is designed for those charged with tobacco control advocacy, lessons learned can be particularly helpful for tobacco control program staff interested in combining program and advocacy efforts.
Key to addressing these challenges is communication. This presentation will address that by oral presentation. Participants will be better equipped at to involve tobacco control program staff in advocacy efforts.
