Learning Objectives: Understand the rationale for the development of the Disparities Pilot Project Understand the steps in the strategic planning process to identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities Understand specific states' efforts to identify and eliminate tobacco-related disparities

Abstract: One of the major goals of the Office on Smoking and Health's National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) is the identification and elimination of tobacco-related disparities. However, states and territories have been struggling with how to successfully address this goal. NTCP grantees have been successful to varying degrees at increasing diversity and inclusivity in their tobacco control efforts; however, the identification of disparities using a science-based, data-driven process has been lacking.

The CDC's Office on Smoking and Health has recently provided supplemental funding through the Disparities Pilot Project to 13 states and 1 territory to build capacity around the identification and elimination of tobacco related disparities. This funding, along with intensive technical assistance and training from OSH, has enabled the grantees to develop tools and strategies to 1) identify and define the disparities; 3) develop an action plan that will begin to reduce and eliminate the identified disparities.

CDC/OSH presenters will discuss the rationale for the Disparities Pilot Project and outline the steps taken to guide the grantees through the year-long process. Representatives from two state programs will discuss their own experiences in creating their statewide workgroups, reviewing the data, developing a strategic plan, and determining action steps.
