Learning Objectives: Understand the effectiveness and associated costs of three Medicaid counseling methods.
Abstract: Medicaid clients who do not know that smoking cessation aids are covered by medicaid insurance may not request them. Health Research, Inc. in Buffalo, NY, will conduct a study in Erie County to compare the cost-effectiveness of three counseling methods (in person; written information on the Medicaid benefit and cessation literature or; written information on the Medicaid benefit alone) in promoting the use of pharmacotherapy to help Medicaid recipients quit smoking. Cessation attempt and success rates and associated costs will be tracked for three months.
