Learning Objectives: Attendees of the presentation will be able to explain how to implement efficient and financially sustainable tobacco cessation interventions in a pediatric outpatient setting.
Abstract:
Problem/Objective: Multiple randomized trials studying the effects of pediatric counseling about environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) have failed to find any change in child ETS exposure. The Pediatric Partnership for Tobacco Free Families (PPTFF) aims to move pediatricians beyond discussing ETS with parents to providing parents with comprehensive tobacco cessation treatments. The goal of the project is to implement a feasible and financially self-sustainable tobacco cessation intervention program for parents, in accordance with the 2,000 Public Health Service guidelines, at five private pediatric offices in Cumberland County, Maine.
Methods: To enable the pediatric offices to achieve this goal, the PPTFF has created a model program for close collaboration between the private pediatric offices, the Maine Tobacco Helpline and community resources designed to decrease provider and family barriers. The objectives for the pediatric offices are to; 1) Improve the rates of documenting household tobacco use at every pediatric visit 2) Increase the frequency of providing comprehensive tobacco cessation interventions 3) Improve billing for tobacco cessation interventions and 4) Increase the rates of referral to the Maine Tobacco Helpline. Chart reviews and referral data will be used to measure our objectives.
Results: Results and lessons learned from the initial six months of the project will be presented at the conference.
Conclusions: The presentation will demonstrate how to implement a cost efficient and reproducible tobacco cessation program for pediatric outpatient sites. The presentation will also highlight the unique opportunities and barriers to providing effective tobacco cessation treatments to parents in a pediatric setting.
