Learning Objectives: Describe key elements of an innovative comprehensive worksite tobacco cessation program.
Abstract: Problem and Objective: Reports indicate tobacco dependence is our nation’s #1 preventable health problem and that 70% of tobacco users want to quit. Employers have a particular stake in providing tobacco treatment since according to the 2000 US Census, 64.1% of Americans received health coverage through their employer. However, from working with statewide businesses, we found that employees were trying to quit tobacco unsuccessfully on their own.
Method:
We collaborated with key partners in our state to develop and offer a unique “optimal services” program to three coal mine sites in rural WV. These “optimal services” include (1) onsite physician directed tobacco treatment with approved pharmacological adjuncts and follow up (2) coaching in three wellness components (stress management, physical activity, and healthy eating) (3) customized Quit Kits for smokers and spit users (4) phone coaching by the WV YNOTQUIT line and (5) dental screenings.
Results:
Our findings: Long term tobacco use with an estimated 60% current usage; much higher participation rates and cessation rates than expected; and high self reported stress levels and sedentary lifestyles.
Conclusion: Based on participant evaluations, we concluded that the convenience of an onsite physician directed program was a key reason for the high participation and successful cessation rates. We also concluded that physical activity, healthy eating, and stress management programs were going to be key elements in helping these miners develop new behaviors and stay quit
