Mom's Quit Connection: Smoking Cessation for Pregnant Women & New Mothers

Merle J. Weitz, MSW, Southern NJ Perinatal Cooperative, Mom's Quit Connection, mweitz@snjpc.org

Learning Objectives: List 5 components of a successful smoking cessation program for pregnant women and new mothers. Identify unique issues that undermine a pregnant woman's ability to quit smoking. Describe outreach strategies to increase referrals to treatment.

Abstract: Abstract: Audience: Cessation counselors, health educators and MCH providers, will learn new strategies for providing smoking cessation services to pregnant women. Often cessation programs do not meet the unique needs of pregnant and parenting women, or utilize community outreach as a referral strategy. Key Points: 1.Mom’s Quit Connection (MQC) is a program of the Southern NJ Perinatal Cooperative (SNJPC), a maternal/child health consortium. Since 2001, it has been funded by the NJ CTCP. 2.MQC is a program aimed at reducing smoking among pregnant women and new moms. 3.MQC utilizes SNJPC’s extensive community network system to engage obstetricians, pediatricians, outreach workers, WIC workers, and hospital staff in identifying and referring smokers to services. 4.Services include individual counseling using case management to develop a personal quit plan. 5.Support Groups address barriers to quitting and teach skills to overcome obstacles. 6.Educational programs occur in clinic waiting rooms, alternative high schools and community forums to communicate the dangers of maternal smoking. 7.Through an incentive program, mom earns gifts for herself and her baby. Educational Experience: Participants will receive handouts and MQC program information. Benefits: The health and financial consequences of maternal smoking and associated childhood illnesses are preventable. Cessation programs must be tailored to meet the unique needs of this population.
