Learning Objectives: Describe the smoking behavior of smokers who enrolled in a stop smoking contest.

Abstract:
Problem/Objective: To describe the number of smokers exposed to the programs, to compare the characteristics of smokers who did and did not participate in the programs, and to assess the smoking behavior among those who enrolled in the programs.
Methods: Several measures were used to assess the reach of the programs including Gross Rating Point data for media coverage, distribution totals for program promotional materials, as well as completed program enrollment. Four to six months after the programs, participants were administered a telephone survey to assess their smoking status and methods used to stop smoking.
Results: 850 smokers participated in the Quit and Win Contest and over 1,700 smokers received vouchers for free nicotine replacement therapy. 35,000 program promotional newsletters were distributed, and two 30-second radio spots reached an adult audience 18-34 years old approximately 12.6 times during the duration of the campaign. Additional analyses will assess quit rates and methods used to stop smoking by program participants.
Conclusions: The contest and NRT giveaway programs appear to have motivated large numbers of smokers to attempt to stop smoking.
