Learning Objectives: Specify the types of retail venues that sell novel tobacco products
Abstract:
Problem/Objective:Although adolescents' use of novel tobacco products (NTP)is approaching that of smokeless tobacco and youth can purchase them at a higher rate than standard cigarettes (41.2% vs 35.1% in a recent national survey, Clark et al), few compliance check programs include NTP in buy attempts. In order to perform NTP purchase attempt surveys, surveillance and enforcement project directors have to modify the types of businesses they usually target.
Methods:Data are synthesized from several multi state field and phone studies that identified novel and conventional tobacco retail venues.
Results:NTP are primarily available in traditional tobacco outlets, such as convenience stores and groceries, but are also sold at by many non-traditional outlets, such as tattoo parlors and import shops. Considerable regional variation is found in the availability of NTP’s in traditional outlets.
Conclusions:In order to ascertain the rate of illegal NTP sales, a wide spectrum of store types must be included in purchase surveys. Screening merchants by telephone before the fieldwork can remove non-sellers from the sample and thus optimize the efficiency of compliance programs.
