Art And Tobacco Control...A Collaboration of Creativity

Kimberly McRae Friedman, BS, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Reality Check, cortlandrc@yahoo.com

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of my poster presentation, attendees will be able to develop a plan of action for successfully working with non-traditional organizations, such as artists, to expand and enhance tobacco control throughout their target area.

Problem/Objective: 1. To collaborate with a non-traditional organization within the community to reach a target audience that is not typically utilized. 2. To engage youth in the process of working with non-traditional organizations and in the development of an initiative from the planning phase through design, development and implementation with non-traditional organizations. 3. To utilize non-traditional organizations, in a creative manner, to get tobacco control messages to youth and community members.

Methods: Youth and coordinator met with non-traditional partners to educate them about the dangers of tobacco advertising and ask for support in collaborating on an initiative. One art gallery agreed to collaborate to create a visual art display depicting tobacco advertising through the years. Meetings were organized and youth and art gallery staff developed a plan, including developing and creating various displays and signage using a variety of art mediums. Press releases, invitations and educational material were developed and disseminated to the media, youth and general public.

Results: This unique opportunity obtained multiple results: 1. Provided youth an outlet for creativity. 2. Created a unique collaboration that drew youth, adult and media attention. 3. Drew a non-traditional audience to the art gallery while simultaneously drawing a non-traditional group to the tobacco control arena.

Conclusions: Participants will be able to implement a non-traditional collaboration within their own community to obtain tobacco control objectives. This presentation is great for any tobacco control staff who wants to learn how to utilize non-traditional partners when delivering tobacco control messaging.
