Developing a Rural Local Media Campaign Using the Surgeon General's Report

Learning Objectives: Identify media and communication strategies & message for rural communities to advance smoke-fre Implement physician advocacy plan related to the Surgeon General's Report Showcase how evidence from Surgeon General Report and other data can mobilize community towards smoke-free workplace policy

Audience: Local, regional and statewide tobacco control advocates

Key Points: An overview of a rural local media campaign in a four county rural public health agencies will be presented related to the release of the 2006 Surgeon General's Report on Secondhand Smoke as well as public opinion polls. Presenters will show how they developed the campaign, how they used it, and how this media campaign developed into a successful partnership with local physicians and access to funding to continue work. Lessons learned,outcomes and samples of media campaigns will be shared that can work in rural setting-building on their presentation at CDC in Oct, 2006 at the National Tobacco Control Manager's meeting.

Learning Objectives: Audience will be given the tools to implement their own media campaign and physician advocacy plan related to the Surgeon General's Report and local poll results in a rural setting.
