Expansion of Non-Cigarette Tobacco Products in the U.S. .

Matthew B. Barry, MPA, Edelman, matt.barry@edelman.com, Dorothy K. Hatsukami, PhD, University of Minnesota, Tobacco Use Research Center, hatsu001@umn.edu, Cristine Delnevo, PhD, UMDNJ-School of Public Health, delnevo@umdnj.edu, Katherine E. Kemper, MBA, Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, International, kkemper@tobaccofreekids.org, Wasim Maziak, MD PhD, University of Memphis, Center for Community Health, Department of Health and Sports Sciences, wmaziak@memphis.edu.

Learning Objectives: Identify current trends in the use of non-cigarette tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco, cigars, and waterpipes. Better understand the differences in the range of toxicity of smokeless tobacco products and medicinal nicotine. Understand the compelling need for better surveillance data to monitor trends in prevalence and to develop appropriate policy interventions based on that data.

Audience: Tobacco control advocates, scientists and policy makers interested in non-cigarette tobacco products.

Key Points: This panel will present research (e.g., prevalence, toxicity/biomarker data, consumer risk perceptions) on non-cigarette tobacco products, including cigars, smokeless tobacco (SLT) and waterpipes and discuss the policy implications stemming from this data. Mr. Barry will provide an overview of the key issues raised by the use of non-cigarette tobacco products, whether these issues have been neglected relative to cigarettes, and why these products warrant renewed attention. Dr. Delnevo will present data on cigar prevalence, including little and flavored cigars, and how these products are competing with cigarettes. Dr. Maziak will present surveillance, consumer and toxicity data on waterpipe use. Dr. Hatsukami will present toxicity/biomarker data on SLT and NRT and discuss how these products are viewed in the broader "harm reduction" debate. Ms. Kemper will present focus group data on consumer perceptions of new SLT products, how they are marketed on interest in switching from cigarettes to SLT and on quitting tobacco use.

Learning Objectives: Attendees will learn about the prevalence of non-cigarette tobacco products, including health risks associated with their use, misperceptions about their safety, and why more data is critical to better understanding the scope of this problem and the policy solutions needed to address it.

Benefits: Attendees can directly interact with some of the leading national and international experts on non-cigarette tobacco products and translate that information into new policy activities and scientific research in their communities and institutions.
