Cessation And Support - Tailoring It To Your Community

Cindy L. Laton, BA, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Community Health Services, claton@firsthealth.org

Learning Objectives: Identify unique avenues for support and cessation implemention within communities

Problem/Objective: For many tobacco users, lack of support is a significant barrier when trying to quit as well as a trigger for relapse.

Methods: FirstHealth of the Carolinas has implemented a cessation program called FirstQuit that provides support where individuals live, work and pray. Most importantly this program is tailored to fit the community, not have the community fit it. Based on the concept of social support, FirstQuit offers individual and group programs with various types of support mechanisms. FirstQuit helps participants identify the kind of support needed to become tobacco-free (i.e. listening, technical or informational, shared experience, participatory, motivational, emotional and practical support). Program support is provided in worksite, community, healthcare, school and the faith-based settings.

Results: As a result of expanding support avenues, FirstQuit has increased program referrals, improved program satisfaction and reduced access challenges for relapse participants.

Conclusions: Many studies report support as an intregral component for tobacco cessation. There are benefits for programs to evaluate support offerings and be willing to make changes depending upon participant feedback.
