Learning Objectives: Describe the pros and cons of a youth summit format to promote advocacy. Identify ways to involve youth in summit planning, facilitation, and evaluation. Assess a summit’s ability to increase advocacy in communities.

Audience: Youth-serving agencies interested in planning an advocacy-based summit.

Key Points: Question Why (?Y), created in North Carolina in 2001, works to empower youth as leaders in building tobacco-free schools, smoke-free communities, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

?Y designed and facilitated a statewide youth summit entitled “Play 2 Win. Play 2 Live: A Gameplan for Advocacy." ?Y youth staff planned and ran all aspects of this summit. Summit participants learned how to effect community change by advocating for policies that limit exposure to tobacco use and secondhand smoke.

This workshop will describe the Play 2 Win (P2W) youth summit format, planning, goals, budget, and evaluation. This includes a 2-month follow-up to explore the advocacy actions pursued by participants.

Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the pros and cons of a youth summit format to promote advocacy. 2. Identify ways to involve youth in summit planning, facilitation, and evaluation. 3. Assess a summit's ability to increase advocacy in communities.

Benefits: P2W information will be shared as a means to explore the steps needed to plan and run a summit, as well as the agency capacity that is required. The pros and cons of the youth summit format will be discussed, including a review of the results that were obtained and a summary of its cost-effectiveness.

Participants in this workshop will assess whether a youth summit format is the best fit for their own agency and goals, while analyzing the youth summit format as a means to promote advocacy.
