Maggie Hopkins, BA, American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation, maggie.hopkins@no-smoke.org, Annie Tegen, MPH, American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation, annie.tegen@no-smoke.org, Kathy Drea, American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa, kdrea@lungil.org.

Learning Objectives: Navigate smokefree ordinance data available on the web. Effectively utilize ordinance summary data materials to garner earned media. Understand which data materials are appropriate for specific audiences.

Audience: Coalition members, public health department staff, voluntary agency staff

Key Points: Local ordinance summary data is available free on the web, and these summary data materials are an effective way to reach out to the media. Earned media can be generated to promote public health by tailoring your message and including facts and figures about smokefree policies.

Learning Objectives: Navigate ordinance summary data in the form of charts, lists and maps, available on the web; effectively utilize these data materials to garner earned media; understand which materials are appropriate for specific targeted audiences.

Benefits: This workshop will go over ways to utilize data on smokefree laws across the country to generate earned media. Earned media can be used to gain stakeholder support, support a smokefree ordinance campaign, and educate the public, including the hospitality industry. Participants will learn how the data can be used to create an environment ripe for the passage of a smokefree law, and to defend existing laws. Used effectively, the materials can garner media coverage which can help frame the importance of local control and the hazards of preemption, and can be used to help repeal existing preemptive state laws or keep preemption from being enacted.

Participants will be introduced to the various free data materials provided on www.no-smoke.org and will be engaged in discussion of how these pieces can be used. Participants who have used the documents in their campaigns will be asked to share success stories.
