Integrating Tobacco Cessation & Policies In Ohio's Mental Health/ AOD Systems

Learning Objectives: Describe best practices for addressing tobacco use among individuals with serious mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Describe effective strategies to implement tobacco dependence treatment and tobacco-free agency policies in community behavioral health settings. Describe major barriers and supports for successful implementation of tobacco dependence treatment.

Audience: Health, Social Services, Behavioral health systems

Key Points: A partnership was developed between the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation, Ohio Dept. of Mental Health and Ohio Dept. of Alchohol and Drug Addiction Services to engage local pilot sites to implement staff training, standardize tobacco dependence assessment/treatment and tobacco-free policies. The outcomes of this pilot demonstrated increase quit rates of staff/clients and changes in prevailing attitudes and beliefs. In addition many sites now have 100% tobacco-free campuses.
