Learning Objectives: Describe the important role tobacco has held in American Indian culture and spirtual life. Describe how cessation services developed for Amerian Indians mujst emphasize the distinction between traditional, sacred use of tobacco from commercial use. Explain the wholistic cessation systems that have been implemented in Oklahoma to address tobacco use among American Indians.
Audience: Statewide Tobacco Control Programs
Key Points: Rates of tobacco abuse among American Indian youth and adults have been much higher than rates of any other sub-group in Oklahoma. American Indians make fewer cessation attempts as compared to other racial/ethnic groups and experience more disease and disability as a result of tobacco use. Tobacco use among American Indians is a complex issue and traditional cessation providers such as clinics, hospitals and quitlines must have training to understand the positive social context in which many American Indians view tobacco.
Learning Objectives: This workshop will describe the collaborative partnerships that have been formed between public health, the CDC Tribal Support Centers, The University of Oklahoma College of Public Health and other key stakeholders to develop a wholistic cessation strategy to address tobacco use among American Indians. In particular, specific and detailed information will be shared about a cessation curriculum that has been developed and proven effective for American Indians and how quitline call specialists have been trained to address the sacred and ceremonial use of tobacco.
Benefits: Data will be shared with participants that describes the key findings from the evaluation of the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline regarding use, satisfaction and quit rates among American Indians. Marketing materials, such as radio, print and outdoor ads designed specifically to encourage American Indian tobacco users to quit will be shared with participants. The Native American Tobacco Education Network will share startegies about how to recruit American Indians to provide consultation and technical assistance to local tobacco cessation programs.
