Learning Objectives: Recognize a self-help cessation program that is available for LGBT young adults
Methods: After identifying a gap in the availability of educational materials for self-identified "queer" young adults who might be interested in quitting smoking, the California LGBT Tobacco Education Partnership set about producing a self-help guide. The guide was reviewed by three different types of reviewers: 1) Adult LGBT cessation experts, 2) Adults who specialize in young adult tobacco control issues and 3) LGBT young adults who were considering quitting smoking. Comments from each reviewer were considered for incorporation into the final version of the guide. A subsequent review was made by the Materials Review Committee of the Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California.
Results: A colorful, culturally-relevant LGBT youth-specific self-help guide entitled "The Last Drag: A Quit Smoking Guide for Young Adults" was produced by the California LGBT Tobacco Education Partnership and has been distributed to those working with young adults across California. Guides were distributed to directors of youth health and recreation programs at LGBT Community Centers, to health specialists on college campuses and to directors of diverse tobacco control programs throughout the state.
Conclusions: This presentation describes a self-help cessation guide for at-risk young adults, those who are LGBT and smoking.
