Learning Objectives: Explain development of culturally and linguistically tailored Chuukese smoke, chew/spit tobacco cessation/secondhand smoke brochure.
Methods: April 2004, initial needs assessment at Kalihi-Palama (KP) Smoke-Free Families Program (SFFP) begins; director and clinical tobacco coordinator determine baseline data required on APIs. KP, Hawaii and National data were analyzed. Surveyed with key informant interviews included multilingual API providers and staff. Findings prompted second assessment (2005) targeting Chuukese patients. Results generated cessation, betel nut usage with tobacco, spit/chew tobacco, and secondhand smoke messages, limited Chuukese resources, plus culturally appropriate pictures and illustrations. Translation of language initially occurred with Chuukese staff, eventually modified AAPCHO guidelines, which lead to recruitment of three outside interpreters, two were utilized. 2006 first pilot test of brochure with a questionnaire completed at KP Women Infants Children, providers, plus two external sites. Internal Task Force and external Advisory Board advises on this material. Chuukese smoke, chew/spit tobacco cessation/secondhand smoke brochure remains in development.
Results: Responded favorable to give to family member or friend. Portray a positive Chuukese family on front panel. Fall 2007 finalize brochure.
Conclusions: Develop and pilot test tailored tobacco cessation materials, with intended population, this case Chuukese, to obtain appropriate cultural and linguistic counsel. Several drafts will transpire before the final product.
